On a half-field, mark out a field of 40m x 35m (the penalty area + an adjacent area of equivalent size). Form 3 teams of 4 including 1 goalkeeper for the defenders. Place 2 teams in the marked area.

  1. The attacking team starts the exercise with an off-the-ball run in the free zone (area adjacent to the penalty area).
  2. The defending team reacts 3 seconds later.
  3. The defending team scores by stop ball in the area adjacent to the penalty area.
  4. The exercise continues with the 3rd team alternating with the offensive team.

Ask the attackers to alternate between set attacks and quick attacks. Instruct the offensive players that they must very quickly reform the block when losing the ball.

The objective of this drill is twofold: it will work on quick attacks on one hand, but also defensive recovery and cover to protect the goal (here the stop-ball area).
