Soccer: 3 Examples of Offensive Corner Kick Combinations

The corner kick (also known as Law 17 in soccer) is a very effective weapon during a match and is far too often neglected, especially in amateur clubs. Today we present some of the most effective offensive combinations on corner kicks. You can work on these combinations during your next training session to be well coordinated during your matches, even against a team that is very effective on defensive corners.

  1. Concentration at the far post with an attacker cutting to the near post
  2. Short play combination then cross to far post
  3. Block with two attackers for a pull-back finish

1. Offensive corner kick combination: concentration at the far post with an attacker cutting to the near post

The first combination we propose is fairly simple to implement but extremely effective. It consists of concentrating all your players at the far post to attract the opposing defensive block, then asking an attacker to cut to the near post.

The players will first position themselves around the penalty area before making runs toward the far post as soon as the corner taker takes their approach. The most wide attacker will then make a quick run toward the near post to cut the trajectory of the ball.

On this type of combination, it goes without saying that the player cutting to the near post must be very comfortable with their heading. They will have 2 options:

  1. Slightly modify the trajectory of the ball to score at the far post.
  2. Come across the ball to play hard at the near post.

2. Short play combination then cross to far post

For this 2nd offensive corner kick combination, we present a solution consisting of a first short pass then a cross to the far post. Your attacker will need to follow the action before quickly asking for the ball at the far post.

It is important to note that to execute this combination well, you will need to be attentive to the positioning and movements of your opponents. There's no point attempting the short pass if the opposing players block the passing lane.

3. Block with two attackers for a pull-back finish

In this 3rd offensive corner kick combination, we propose performing a block with 2 players to free up the 3rd central player who will make a pull-back run. Depending on the quality of the cross, they can then finish first time with a header or with a half-volley.

This combination is more difficult to implement because the pull-back finish is not within everyone's reach. Nevertheless, it is ideal for freeing up a player in a pull-back position and you could, for example, combine it with a control followed by a cross to the far post.
