Updated: 08 Mar 2026

Facing U9 players, who can sometimes be scattered but eager to learn, it can be challenging to properly prepare your training session. Discover our examples of drills and our tips to effectively prepare your next U9 training session.

How to Plan a U9 Soccer Practice?

Coaching a U9 team is no easy task! With young players who can sometimes be easily distracted but are eager to learn, it can be challenging to properly prepare a training session. The main objective? Create a session that is fun but, above all, adapted to each U9 player. From selecting exercises and planning the session to managing equipment, many elements must be considered as a coach.

To help you prepare effective training sessions for U9 players, we’ve put together a detailed guide with practical tips.

The Importance of Preparing Your Sessions in Advance

To ensure both the effectiveness and smooth organization of a U9 training session, you should take time beforehand to properly design and plan it. This starts with clearly defining the objectives of the season and the goals of each individual session.

Effective planning should also take the season calendar into account (school holidays, training camps, regional competitions, etc.). Depending on these periods, adapt your training sessions accordingly. For example, in the weeks leading up to holidays or soccer camps, you might prioritize more relaxed and fun sessions with additional games.

When preparing your sessions, you should also consider:

  • Logistics, including field reservations and checking equipment availability.
  • Time allocation for each exercise (for example, keep about 15 minutes at the end of practice for a small-sided game).
  • Your coaching message (for example the day before a match day event or a few days after a tournament). It’s important to review with players what worked well and what didn’t, and organize your session accordingly (especially with younger players).

Fun and Age-Appropriate Exercises for U9 Players

Including a variety of fun, game-based exercises helps keep children engaged throughout the session. For example, here is a drill suited for a U9 training session: the “Burglars Game”, which focuses on dribbling.

Drill for U9 training session: the “Burglars Game”

This is an excellent activity for grassroots soccer. It develops dribbling skills while introducing a collective element through a relay-style challenge.

You can find the full instructions in the detailed exercise sheet for the Burglars Game for U9 players.

Other exercises you can include in your session:

  1. Agility courses with the ball: to improve ball control and coordination.
  2. Triangle passing games: to develop short passing and off-the-ball movement.
  3. Small-sided games: to apply skills in realistic game situations.
  4. Dribbling circuits: using cones to improve ball mastery.
  5. Shooting accuracy drills: exercises designed to improve shooting technique from different distances and angles (including with the weaker foot).
  6. Simplified rule-based games: to teach the rules of soccer in a fun way.
  7. Other playful activities: such as juggling challenges or skill competitions.

Another example of a fun U9 activity is the Double Passing Sequence in an Hourglass and Diamond Shape. This exercise helps improve passing accuracy, timing, and off-the-ball movement.

It also develops spatial awareness and coordination between players, making it very useful for building game intelligence and faster execution under pressure.

To set it up:

  • Place 4 cones of the same color to form a rectangle of about 15x20 yards.
  • Then place 4 additional cones to create a diamond shape with sides of about 15 yards.
  • Create two teams of about 6 players each and position them on each passing circuit.

Selecting Exercises Based on Your Seasonal Plan

Choosing the right exercises is a key pillar of an effective training session for U9 players. To maintain the children’s attention and create a dynamic learning environment, it is essential to select activities that are not only age-appropriate but also stimulate their technical, physical, and cognitive development.

It’s also important to consider each player’s current level to ensure every child finds value and enjoyment in the training session. This sometimes means adjusting exercises to make them easier or more challenging depending on the needs of the group.

Flexibility and adaptability are always valuable qualities for a youth coach.

Check Your Equipment Before Each Training Session

Preparing and checking equipment before each session is essential to ensure productive training. This means making sure all necessary equipment is available and in good condition.

Balls, cones, pinnies, and goals should all be checked beforehand to avoid delays or interruptions during practice. If possible, it’s also helpful to have water bottles available for your players.

Always Have a Plan B

Unexpected situations are part of both life and soccer. Injuries, weather conditions, or unexpected player absences can affect your training session.

Having a backup plan is essential. Prepare variations of exercises that can easily be adjusted based on the number of players or the available space, or keep additional activities ready that can be organized quickly.

Remember that as a U9 coach, you will often communicate with parents and families. Having alternative options helps you manage unforeseen situations and explain how the session is being adapted.

What Age Group Is U9?

In soccer, the U9 category simply refers to players between 8 and 9 years old within a club. At this stage, players begin to better understand the rules of the game while developing fundamental technical skills.

Learning through games and fun activities is therefore essential to keep them engaged and support their development as soccer players. Training sessions should encourage both individual development and teamwork, while remaining enjoyable and accessible.
