Warm-up

Combinations with a one-touch play circuit and supporting player (U18)

Ideal as a warm-up, this exercise is a great way to get started. Remember to emphasize the importance of verbal communication, as well as visual communication (off-the-ball runs and movements). This drill was used during a session at Liverpool by Jurgen Klopp.

Animation: Combinations with a one-touch play circuit and supporting player
In an area of approximately 25x35m, set up 10 cones to form 2 work areas as shown in the diagram. Then place 12 players on each of the cones, with 2 players at the starting cone with a ball.

The 2 groups will play in parallel and each passing sequence will proceed as follows:
  1. The 1st player A starts with dribbling for a few meters and then makes a short pass to the 2nd player B. A then takes B's place.
  2. B plays a layoff with one touch to the 3rd player C.
  3. C also plays in one-touch to the 4th player D, who will lay it off into B's run.
  4. B then plays to the 5th player E, who will control, dribble for 8-10m, and then make a short pass to the 1st player of the next circuit.
  5. The passing sequence continues in the same way on the other side.

Progression: the exercise is conducted in exactly the same way, but the last player will make a long pass instead of finishing with dribbling and a short pass.

A demanding technical warm-up adapted for U18 players

At the U18 level, a warm-up should no longer be just about getting loose. It must already include technical, cognitive, and relational demands that closely reflect the game. This combination circuit exercise perfectly meets that objective by challenging precision, timing, and collective coordination.

One-touch play forces players to constantly anticipate. Even before receiving the ball, they must read their teammates’ movements and adjust their positioning. This requirement fully aligns with U18 soccer, where speed of execution becomes a key factor.

The supporting player’s role is also central. They ensure continuity in ball circulation and force teammates to make themselves available in the right spaces. It’s an excellent way to reinforce these four key aspects at the U18 level:

  1. Quality of footwork and movement
  2. Game awareness before receiving
  3. Verbal and non-verbal communication
  4. Collective fluidity in passing sequences

Developing game speed and technical accuracy in your U18 players

At this stage, progress often comes from the ability to play quickly without losing accuracy. This exercise puts players in exactly that situation. Repetition of sequences, combined with the one-touch constraint, improves technical quality under pressure.

Adding a long pass progression brings an extra dimension. It forces players to adjust their technique, body shape, and perception of distance. The exercise evolves from controlled short play to the ability to change tempo and switch the point of attack.

For U18 coaches, we generally recommend focusing on a few key points to maximize the effectiveness of the drill: consistent tempo, high technical standards, and constant communication between players.

At this level, the difference is no longer just about pure technique, but about the ability to link actions quickly, accurately, and collectively. That’s exactly what this exercise helps develop within your U18 squad.
