Combinations with a one-touch play circuit and supporting player (U19)

Ideal as a warm-up, this exercise is a great way to get started. Remember to emphasize the importance of verbal communication, as well as visual communication (off-the-ball runs and movements). This drill was used during a session at Liverpool by Jurgen Klopp.

Animation: Combinations with a one-touch play circuit and supporting player
In an area of approximately 25x35m, set up 10 cones to form 2 work areas as shown in the diagram. Then place 12 players on each of the cones, with 2 players at the starting cone with a ball.

The 2 groups will play in parallel and each passing sequence will proceed as follows:
  1. The 1st player A starts with dribbling for a few meters and then makes a short pass to the 2nd player B. A then takes B's place.
  2. B plays a layoff with one touch to the 3rd player C.
  3. C also plays in one-touch to the 4th player D, who will lay it off into B's run.
  4. B then plays to the 5th player E, who will control, dribble for 8-10m, and then make a short pass to the 1st player of the next circuit.
  5. The passing sequence continues in the same way on the other side.

Progression: the exercise is conducted in exactly the same way, but the last player will make a long pass instead of finishing with dribbling and a short pass.

U19: How to structure support play and quick combinations

At the U19 level, players must be able to integrate into a structured team game model. This combination circuit with one-touch play and a supporting player is designed to work precisely on that aspect. It’s no longer just about completing a pass, but about linking coherent actions that serve the collective.

The circuit requires well-organized movement and a clear understanding of roles. Each player must react immediately after passing, while repositioning intelligently. The supporting player becomes a key piece in maintaining fluidity and constantly providing options.

This U19 soccer exercise helps develop:

  1. Quality of support play (checking to and off the ball)
  2. Continuity in possession
  3. Coordination of collective movements
  4. Occupation of spaces between the lines

Improving decision-making and game speed at U19 level

At this stage, the difference lies in the ability to make quick decisions under pressure. The one-touch constraint in this exercise forces U19 players to anticipate before even receiving the ball, which is essential in match situations.

Each sequence challenges game awareness, body orientation, and technical precision. Players must quickly scan their environment to make the right decision while maintaining a high tempo. This directly enhances overall team playing speed.

The progression with long passing adds an interesting tactical layer. It allows players to work on changing tempo and exploiting spaces over longer distances. Players must then adjust their technique and timing to remain effective.

This exercise fits perfectly within a performance-oriented U19 training approach, preparing players to play fast, accurately, and collectively.
