Warm-up: Directional ball control on the ground

Comprehensive warm-up exercise to improve your players on various types of directional control and work on passing in youth soccer training.

Animation: Warm-up: Directional ball control on the ground
Place 4 cones to form a 15m x 15m square. Position a player at each cone and give a ball to each player.

In this first variation, the player receiving the pass must control the ball by directing it towards the next player and then make a short pass.

Here are some possible progressions for this very simple exercise to set up:
  1. Inside/outside control
  2. Use the strong/weak foot
  3. Pass behind/in front of the cone
  4. Take the place of the player to whom the pass was made.
  5. Change direction at your whistle.

Remind that information gathering and concentration are fundamental. Emphasize the importance of being on your toes dynamically, attacking the ball, and orienting your body towards the pass.

Why Warm-Ups Are Essential for U6 Soccer

Warm-ups in U6 soccer are a key step to start the session the right way. At this age, children are discovering the game and need a fun, structured environment to gradually get into the activity. A good warm-up helps activate the body, but more importantly, it captures attention and creates enjoyment. In U6, the goal isn’t physical performance—it’s engagement.

A successful warm-up promotes coordination, motor skills, and confidence. It also prepares young players to listen to instructions. The more dynamic and fun the start of the session is, the more engaged the children will be throughout the rest of the training.

How to Build a Fun U6 Warm-Up

For an effective U6 soccer warm-up, you should focus on simple, dynamic activities adapted to their age. The fun aspect should always come before pure technique.

Here are some key principles to follow:

  • Use ball-based games to spark interest
  • Give short and clear instructions
  • Keep players moving constantly (avoid waiting time)
  • Introduce imaginative themes (animals, colors, challenges)
  • Encourage players without over-correcting

The warm-up should last between 10 and 15 minutes maximum. The goal is to create a positive environment where every child feels comfortable participating.

Examples of U6 Soccer Warm-Up Activities

To keep sessions varied, it’s important to have multiple warm-up ideas adapted to U6 players. The games should be easy to understand and quick to set up.

Alternating between different formats helps maintain children’s motivation. A good U6 soccer warm-up should always combine fun, movement, and basic technical foundations—without ever losing sight of the main goal: making kids want to play.
