Can You Introduce Endurance Work in U13?

The question is a fair one. In U13, some players are in the middle of a growth spurt, which can create joint vulnerabilities and increased fatigue. In this context, proposing high endurance volumes is a mistake we strongly advise against. It is not that endurance cannot be developed in U13: it is that it must be trained in an adapted way, respecting the physiological constraints of the age group.

What works well in U13 is endurance integrated into game formats: moderate-intensity ball drills, long small-sided games with few rest periods, athletic circuits that alternate effort and active recovery. Pure ball-free endurance can have its place at the start of the season or following the winter break, but it should never make up the majority of session time. The U13 endurance drills offer circuits that respect precisely these constraints, with progressive formats adapted to the varied physiological profiles of the age group.

Combining Endurance and Technique in U13

This is the most effective and appropriate approach in U13. A chained passing circuit with no pause, a long high-density small-sided game, a dribbling drill with sprints between stations: these formats build endurance without ever sacrificing technical work. The player simultaneously improves their cardiovascular capacity and the quality of their actions under fatigue, two qualities that always go hand in hand in a match.

The U13 circuit drills offer formats that integrate this logic precisely, with chained stations that combine athletic effort and technical actions within the same continuous sequence.

Endurance and Recovery in U13

In U13, recovery is as important as effort. A player who does not recover sufficiently between two intense sessions cannot make physical progress: they accumulate fatigue. What we advise U13 coaches is to respect a simple rule: for every intense endurance session, allow at least 48 hours of recovery before the next. This load-and-recovery logic starts in U13 and protects players across the season. The article soccer winter break: complete training program offers very concrete guidance on planning load and recovery cycles across a half-season, directly applicable for maintaining your U13 players' endurance throughout the competition period.
