Collective replacement and management of offensive and defensive space

Through this exercise, your players work on collective repositioning, closing down space, and defensive build-up play, as well as finding the available teammate and creating an overload in attack.

Animation: Collective replacement and management of offensive and defensive space
On a half-field, set up 2 small goals with cones on each side of the center circle. Place 5 attackers and 4 defenders with a goalkeeper.

The attackers must try to score in the large goal and the defenders in the small goals. The defenders must make at least 3 passes before they can score. The attackers must play quickly, with a maximum of 2 touches.

Change players every 3 minutes.

Explain clearly to the defense the defensive transition when losing the ball: the defender closest to the ball will press the attacker while the others track back into their zone or mark one of the attackers.

The Importance of Defensive Recovery in U13

In U13, defensive recovery enters a new dimension. It is no longer just a question of individual behavior: dropping back quickly after a turnover. It is the beginning of collective organization: who presses the ball-carrier, who covers the central channel, who tracks the most dangerous attacker. These distinct roles within collective defensive recovery start to become accessible in U13, as long as they are developed in simple formats with a small number of players.

What we advise coaches working on this theme in U13 is to start with defensive 2v1 and 3v2 situations, then progress to formats with more players. In a defensive 2v1, roles are clear: one player pressures the ball-carrier, the other covers the goal-side channel. In a 3v2, a third player tracks the supporting attacker. These simple situations build collective habits without excessive organizational complexity. The U13 information gathering drills integrate naturally into this work, because reading the opponent's play is the prerequisite for any well-oriented defensive recovery.

Combining Defensive Recovery and Transitions in U13

In U13, defensive recovery cannot be thought of independently from offensive-to-defensive transition. They are two sides of the same reality: losing the ball and returning to a defensive position before the opponent can exploit the space. The best way to work on this connection in U13 is to offer formats where both phases are in the same sequence: an attacking action that leads to a turnover, followed by an immediately timed recovery. The time constraint is particularly effective: "the opponent cannot attack for three seconds", because it gives the recovery a concrete objective. The U13 technique drills offer circuits where this transition is naturally embedded in near-match game situations.

Defensive Recovery and Set Pieces in U13

One often-overlooked aspect of defensive recovery in U13: corners and free kicks. After an unconverted corner or a cleared free kick, the team must recover its defensive shape before the opponent organizes a new attack. This precise moment, immediately after a set piece, is one of the most dangerous in competition, because players have often pushed forward and the space behind is maximal. The article defending on corner kicks in soccer illustrates very concretely how to organize defensive recovery in these specific situations, with markers directly applicable from U13.
