4-player passing sequence with scanning

Ideal for youth soccer, this exercise, seemingly very simple, will allow your players to work on their awareness and passing quality.

Animation: 4-player passing sequence with scanning
Using cones, set up triangles of approximately 15m per side, so that the triangles overlap. Then form teams of 4 players: 1 player at each cone and the last player at the first cone (with the ball).

The sequence will proceed as follows:
  1. The 1st player A will play to the 2nd player B.
  2. The latter controls, then plays to the 3rd player C.
  3. C controls and then makes a pass to the 4th player D, and so on.
  4. A takes B's place, B takes C's place, and C returns to the starting point.

Progression

Once the sequence is well established, you can offer several variations to your players:
  • Change the direction of play arbitrarily in the middle of the sequence.
  • Add double one-two passes after each pass to make the exercise even more challenging.
  • Modify the position of the cones to create even more “crossing” between the players.

Very simple in appearance, this exercise is ideal for working on game awareness, due to the placement and overlapping of the different triangles. The game awareness in this exercise centered around a passing sequence will help players better read ball trajectories and anticipate the movements of their opponents as well as those of their teammates.

What Should a Good U11 Warm-Up Look Like?

At the U11 level, the soccer warm-up should reflect match demands. Players are now capable of linking technical actions and making simple decisions under pressure. The warm-up should therefore be dynamic, ball-based, and include opposition.

The goal is to recreate game-like situations: movement, runs, passing, and awareness. This phase helps players mentally “switch into” the session.

A successful warm-up immediately puts players at the right intensity and gives them responsibility, making them active from the very first minutes.

Why Is the Warm-Up So Important at This Age?

A U11 soccer warm-up plays a key role in player development. At this stage, the quality of the warm-up directly impacts engagement and concentration throughout the session.

The benefits are numerous:

  1. Better physical activation and reduced risk of injury
  2. Faster entry into a high level of concentration
  3. Development of decision-making in motion
  4. Reinforcement of technical fundamentals in real situations
  5. Establishment of a positive team dynamic

A structured warm-up also saves time. Players are ready more quickly to handle complex situations and progress efficiently.

Key Principles for a Successful U11 Warm-Up

Building an effective U11 warm-up requires finding the right balance between simplicity, intensity, and connection to the game. The idea is to make players move, think, and play at the same time. We usually advise our members to:

  1. Use progressive activities with opposition
  2. Maintain a high tempo with minimal downtime
  3. Give short, action-oriented instructions
  4. Allow freedom to encourage initiative

U11 Warm-Up: 4 Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Exercises that are too analytical and disconnected from the game
  2. A warm-up that is too passive or too long
  3. Too many explanations that break the flow
  4. Neglecting progression between activities
