Exploiting a Numerical Advantage with 3v2 Duels

Taken from a session with AS Roma, this drill allows you to work on the numerical advantage in a small area dynamically with 3v2 duels.

Animation: Exploiting a Numerical Advantage with 3v2 Duels
Mark out an area of 40x30m (approximately twice the size of the penalty area) and then place a second goal on the opposite side. Form 2 teams of 9 players and ask the players to position themselves around the goals (see animation).

The exercise starts with a 3v2 duel (here 3 reds against 2 blues). If the team with the numerical advantage scores (here the reds), they stay on the field and attack the opposite goal. Then 2 new blue players come in to defend.

If the team with the numerical disadvantage recovers the ball (here the blues), an additional blue player enters the field along with 2 red defenders to form a new 3v2 duel.

The objective of the exercise is to work on exploiting a numerical advantage to finish on a large goal. From a defensive point of view, you can focus your instructions on the importance of coordinating the press between the 2 players.

Should you really work on duels in U18?

The question is worth asking. In U18, some coaches feel that a player's duel profile is set and that specific work on this theme no longer adds much. This is a view we challenge. Duels remain trainable in U18, but the approach must be radically different from earlier categories.

What changes in U18 is that the duel is no longer trained in isolation. It is systematically embedded in a real match context: spaces close to competition, maximal physical intensity, active direct opposition. A comfortable 1v1 at seventy percent intensity does not prepare a U18 player for the duels they will face in competition. The U18 technical drills offer high-intensity duel formats under conditions close to adult match play, directly applicable for maintaining and refining this competency throughout the season.

The Wrong Drills for Duels in U18

In U18, some widely used formats give the illusion of developing duels without actually doing so. Straight 1v1s with no decision to make, duel situations always from the same angle, confrontations without an active goalkeeper or collective objective: these drills have their place in technical warm-ups, but they do not prepare players for real match duels.

What genuinely drives duel progress in U18 is situational variety and increasing pressure: a duel after intense physical effort, a confrontation in a tight space with teammates close by, a 1v1 that directly leads into a team situation. These formats replicate the real complexity of the duel in competition. The U18 small-sided games naturally generate this variety in competitive contexts where every duel has direct consequences on the score.

Duels and Physical Preparation in U18

In U18, duel quality late in a match often reveals a player's physical preparation level. A tired attacker loses their ball-winning duels. An exhausted defender can no longer adopt the retreating stance needed to delay effectively. This connection between physical condition and duel quality is rarely worked on explicitly, but it is very real. Exposing players to duel situations late in the session, when fatigued, builds the physical and mental resilience that shows up directly in matches. The article soccer conditioning: complete program and guide offers very concrete guidance for integrating this kind of work into season planning, directly applicable in U18.
