Attacking to defensive transition with a 5v3 in a dual zone

Possession drill that will allow your players to work on the attacking-defensive transition with the possibility of implementing multiple variations.

Animation: Attacking to defensive transition with a 5v3 in a dual zone
Mark out an initial space of 30x25m approximately, then place a second central zone of 20x15m inside this rectangle. Form a team of 5 players that you will place in the central zone, and a team of 7 players with 3 players in the central zone and the remaining 4 players in the large zone.

The exercise begins with a 5vs3 possession game inside the central zone. The objective for the players with a numerical advantage is to make 10 consecutive passes without losing the ball. If the opposing team regains the ball, their objective is to find the outside players to create a 7vs5 in the large zone

When the team of 5 players regains possession, they must play again in the central zone to resume the 5vs3 possession game inside the central zone.

You can work in sessions of 4 to 5 minutes with team rotations.

Variation: set up 2 small goals and organize a 4vs4 in the small zone, as well as 2 players from each team in the wide zone. The objective is then to make 5 consecutive passes in the central zone before finding a teammate outside to finish on the small goals with one-touch play.

Variation: shooting on small goals

What is the U19 category in soccer?

The U19 category includes players aged 18-19 years. It's a particular age because you may observe a form of maturity in some players that they didn't have before. This is what will allow you to offer higher quality U19 training sessions. The U19 category is undoubtedly a decisive year for many young players. It is somewhat of an intermediate step between adult soccer and

At this stage, U19 players have generally acquired solid technical and tactical foundations. The goal then becomes to refine these soccer qualities while taking into account other elements, less considered in previous categories, such as injury management, individual personalities, or leadership in the locker room.

This transition requires not only increased commitment and discipline from each coach, both on and off the field, to ensure not only sporting results but also the progression of each player.

To best assist you in preparing your U19 training sessions, here is a detailed guide.

The objectives of the U19 category

In the U19 category, the focus is on perfecting technical and tactical skills, strengthening physical and muscular development, as well as developing a true personality on the field (decision-making, vision, stress management, and handling big events…).

Some tips for coaching a U19 team

Preparing and structuring your U19 training sessions is not an easy task. Here are some essential tips for successfully coaching a senior team:

  • Focus more on game strategy in sessions: at this level, players must develop a deep understanding of the game and the coach's vision. Use match analyses, video sessions (professional teams, etc.) to convey your strategy and replicate it in training.

  • Promote player autonomy: encourage your players to take responsibility for their own development, including physical preparation, nutrition, sleep, and recovery, as well as analyzing their performances. Autonomy fosters maturity and prepares players for the rigors of senior soccer.

  • Intensify physical preparation: likewise, U19 players must be prepared for the physical demands of senior soccer. Integrate specific conditioning, including strength, endurance, and injury prevention, into your training sessions. You can also emphasize essential elements outside of training such as rest, nutrition, etc.

  • Encourage leadership: identify and cultivate natural leaders within the team. Assigning leadership responsibilities (such as the captain's role) can help develop the commitment and motivation of the entire team.

  • Celebrate progress and victories off the field: recognizing and celebrating individual improvements and team successes is essential. Take the time to celebrate various victories or key moments of the season (qualification, seasonal events, etc.).

What training exercises for a U19 team?

It is often said that the quality of a U19 training session depends on the involvement and concentration of your players. Your U19 players can demonstrate strong involvement, as long as you bring rhythm. Prioritize tactical exercises to work on more complex game systems: the 4-4-2, the 4-5-1 formation, the 4-2-3-1, the 4-3-3 system or even the 3-5-2. Here is a series of exercises for a U19 team, inspired by many professional soccer teams, and the world's best coaches:

  1. Pressing games: create high-pressure situations where players must execute precise controls, quick passes, and shots under opponent pressure. This can include small-sided games where possession time is limited, forcing players to make quick and precise decisions.

  2. Practice offensive sequences between lines like Pep Guardiola: this exercise, widely practiced in Manchester City training, aims to perfect a particular offensive sequence involving passing through the lines.

  3. Transitioning the ball from the goalkeeper with a choice between short passing game and direct play: this exercise focuses on training the goalkeeper and the positioning of players around him when he has the ball.

  4. Position-specific conditioning programs: conduct training sessions focused on developing speed, endurance, and strength, tailored to the specific demands of each position on the field. This can include speed circuits for forwards, endurance exercises for midfielders, and strength work for defenders.

  5. Finishing workshops from various angles and situations: organize exercises that put forwards in different positions around the goal area, challenging them to score from passes, crosses, and open play situations.

  6. Possession games: set up possession games that encourage creativity, game vision, and communication on the field.

  7. Recovery and injury prevention sessions: integrate active recovery exercises, stretching, and targeted muscle strengthening to prevent injuries before and after matches. These sessions are crucial to ensure players' longevity and their ability to maintain a high level throughout the season.
