Tic-Tac-Toe possession game with overload

A very fun game that combines problem-solving, decision-making, and attacking-defensive transitions. Highly appreciated by players and ideal for soccer schools!

Animation: Tic-Tac-Toe possession game with overload
Mark out a zone of approximately 20x25m with 2 small goals on each width. Outside this playing area, set up a tic-tac-toe grid using cones. Form 2 teams of 5 players and position yourself outside the area with a source of balls by your side.

The exercise starts with a tic-tac-toe (using pinnies or colored cones). Each player must place a pinnie in the square of their choice. The first team to make a line of 3 (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal) will then gain a numerical advantage for the following opposition. As soon as the point is scored, 2 players from the winning team and 1 player from the losing team enter the playing area, resulting in a 2vs1.

When a goal is scored, 1 player from each team enters the field to create a 3vs2. With the next goal, the same process leads to a 4vs3, then 5vs4, and finally ends with a 5vs5 in terms of the final opposition.

Count the number of goals scored for each team to establish a form of competition, then restart with the tic-tac-toe once the 5vs5 is completed.

Note: if the intermediate oppositions (2vs1, 3vs2, etc.) are too long, you can add a time limit and bring in new players even if no team has scored.

The tic-tac-toe game adapted to soccer is a classic, and this variant with opposition is very popular with players!

Why work on agility in U10

In U10, agility is no longer just a motor quality to develop alongside technical work. It becomes a skill that directly shapes the quality of play: a more agile player gets into position before their opponent, releases the ball faster, and creates spaces that defenses at this age cannot close quickly enough. Agility in U10 is often what separates a player who reacts to situations from one who creates them.

What changes compared to U8 and U9 is that agility must now integrate into more complex sequences. It is no longer just reacting fast to a signal: it is reacting fast and making the right decision in the same movement. A player who starts quickly but goes the wrong way is not truly agile in the soccer sense. Useful agility in U10 is the kind triggered by a correct reading of the situation. The U10 cognitive drills develop precisely this combination, imposing a cognitive constraint before the start that forces the player to read before acting.

Combining agility and cognitive work in U10

This is the most effective combination to develop in U10. An agility drill with colors to identify, a start triggered by an opponent's movement, a small-sided game where the first correct action earns a bonus point: these formats simultaneously develop physical reactivity and game reading, two qualities that always go hand in hand in soccer. What we advise coaches working on this theme in U10 is never to offer pure agility with no tactical purpose. Agility without decision-making does not develop soccer players. It develops athletes who do not know what to do with their speed in a match.

The U10 fun games offer many formats that integrate this dual dimension in competitive, engaging situations, with simple rules that sustain intensity throughout the drill.

Agility in the development of the U10 player

In U10, agility trained regularly fundamentally changes a player's profile over the course of a season. It is not a fixed quality: it is a trainable one that improves visibly within a few weeks when the right formats are used. U10 players who have worked well on their agility arrive in U11 and U12 with a concrete physical advantage that allows them to absorb much higher demands without difficulty. It is a long-term investment that genuinely pays off in the categories ahead.

For a practical framework on structuring coherent sessions that integrate agility work into a broader program, the article U10-U11 complete practice guide offers clear guidance on progression and how to organize each training block across the season.
