Athletic circuit with ball: passing and agility work

This is a circuit that combines many aspects of a player's work such as athletic training, agility, and passing quality. Used in pre-season at Manchester City, it should help your players prepare well for the year.

Animation: Athletic circuit with ball: passing and agility work
Prepare your workshop in advance to avoid keeping your players waiting. You will need poles, 4 hoops, and 3 cones. Don't forget the discs.

The first player in the circuit (A) positions at the disc and will make a pass to the second player (B) who returns it with one-touch play. A will then play a through ball for B through the gate in front. After making the pass, A will perform agility and speed work within the hoops, then the 3 cones behind.

The second player B will then play to C, the third player, who will receive the ball after slaloming through the poles. C then plays a short pass to the last player, D, who will perform a dummy run and then go into dribbling for a few meters. The circuit ends with B making a pass to the next player waiting at the start.

Combining different components of a player's work such as athletic work, agility, and passing quality, this workshop will allow you to train your players under good conditions.

Remember to emphasize your instructions on relative intensity: the acceleration of the second player and the agility work of the first player must be done at 100%. These 2 workshops set the pace for the exercise, they should not be neglected.

Working too much on agility in U15: good or bad idea?

The question is worth asking. In U15, some coaches dedicate entire physical preparation blocks to agility, sometimes at the expense of technical and tactical work. This is a mistake. Agility does not develop through volume: it develops through effort quality and variety of stimulation. Ten fully recovered maximal sprints with a different signal each repetition develop agility far more than thirty sprints chained together on the same circuit.

The right balance in U15 is straightforward: agility must be present in every session, but never as an isolated physical block. It integrates into the warm-up, transitions between drills, and high-intensity game situations. A small-sided game with a counter-attack constraint, a passes-agility-finishing circuit, a 1v1 duel on a variable signal: these formats generate explosive efforts naturally, without sacrificing technical or tactical work time. The U15 technical drills offer many variations around these formats, calibrated to the level and demands of the category.

Combining agility and cognitive work in U15

This is one of the most powerful combinations to develop in U15. A player who starts fast but goes the wrong way is not really using their agility. What makes the difference at this level is the ability to read the situation before starting: identifying available space, anticipating the opponent's movement, choosing the right direction in a fraction of a second. This cognitive agility is far more valuable than pure speed.

Formats that develop this dual dimension in U15: a color game with a variable signal before the start, a duel triggered by an opponent's movement rather than a neutral signal, a pressing situation where the player must identify the target before sprinting. These simple constraints transform a standard agility drill into something far more formative. The U15 cognitive drills offer precisely these formats, with situations where decision-making and movement are inseparable.

Agility in the half-spaces in U15

In U15, agility takes on a new tactical dimension when applied to the half-spaces. A player who can start fast in those zones between the central channel and the wide areas, at the right moment, creates imbalances that few defenses at this age can neutralize. This is no longer general agility: it is positional agility, directly connected to a precise tactical reading of the field.

Developing this positional agility in U15 requires drills that impose movements into specific zones: game situations where the half-spaces are defined and rewarded, formats where starting fast in the right area earns more. The article half-spaces in soccer: definition, examples, and drills illustrates very concretely why agility in these zones is one of the most differentiating qualities in U15 and beyond.
