How to improve your U15 players' duels
In U15, improving a group's duels no longer comes through basic drills. The technical foundations are normally in place. What remains to develop is execution quality under maximum pressure: winning a duel in the seventieth minute of a tight match, shielding the ball with a defender on your back after a long sprint, or making a defensive intervention on a forward running at full speed. These situations are built in training under conditions close to real match play.
What we advise coaches working on duels in U15 is to systematically vary the type of duel offered in every session. An offensive 1v1 on a cross, a defensive duel on a build-up situation, a 2v1 after a transition, an aerial duel in the box: this variety builds an adaptability in duels that is worth far more than mastery of a single type of confrontation. The U15 technical drills offer precisely this diversity in high-intensity formats matched to the level of the category.
What drills to use for duels in U15
In U15, the most effective duel drills are those that faithfully replicate match conditions. No straight 1v1s with no real stakes: situations where the outcome of the duel has direct consequences on the score or the team's collective organization. The formats that work best:
- 1v1 duel after a transition: recover the ball and immediately enter a duel with an opponent sprinting back. Time pressure forces fast decisions and maximal efforts.
- Defensive duel on build-up: the defender must delay and channel the attacker toward the less dangerous side while teammates recover their positions.
- 2v1 with a chasing defender: the attacker receives a ball played in behind and must finish before the defender gets back. Decision speed is decisive.
- Aerial duel on a cross: timing of the jump, body positioning, taking position before the cross. A very specific action that few coaches work on explicitly in U15.
The U15 tactical drills embed these formats in near-match game situations, with realistic constraints that force the right behaviors.
Duels at the Heart of Defensive Choice in U15
In U15, defensive duels are inseparable from collective tactical choices. A team that defends man-to-man puts its players in permanent direct duel situations. A team that defends zonally redistributes duels differently, asking each player to defend a space rather than a specific opponent. These two approaches have direct implications for how defensive duels are trained. The article zonal marking vs man marking: which to choose? illustrates these two defensive philosophies very concretely and their implications for duel work in training, directly applicable for enriching your approach in U15.
