7v7 Possession Game with 3 Neutral Players and Gate Passes

Used by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in February 2019, this possession game is ideal for working on the positioning and movement of your players.

Animation: 7v7 Possession Game with 3 Neutral Players and Gate Passes
On a half-field, set up 4 gates as shown in the diagram and form 2 teams of 7 players, as well as 3 neutral players. Also, make sure to place balls all around the field to avoid wasting time in case of a ball out and maintain high intensity.

The game starts with a pass from the coach to the blue team. The blues must maintain possession with the help of the 3 neutral players while the 7 yellow players try to win it back. The goal for the blue team is to make a pass through one of the gates. However, they cannot pass through the same gate twice in a row.

When the yellows win the ball, it's their turn to perform a possession game to try to find a teammate through a gate.

Variation 1: you can require your players to make the pass through the gate with one touch. This will increase the intensity of the exercise and make the task slightly more difficult for your players.

Variation 2: you can also ask your players to dribble through the gates, specifying that only team players can score a point. The neutral players are only there for support.

The Pedagogical Progression of Rondos in U17

In U17, the pedagogical progression around rondos must be reversed compared to earlier categories. In U12 and U13, you moved from simple to complex. In U17, you start from the situations closest to a match and work toward formats that isolate a specific quality. A warm-up rondo in U17 must already be high-intensity, with few freedoms and constraints close to real conditions. It is no longer a progressive activation tool: it is a demanding work tool from the very first repetition.

What we advise U17 coaches who use rondos in their warm-up is to never offer them without a touch constraint below two touches maximum, and to introduce immediate counter-pressing on a turnover from the first minutes. The constraints that guarantee this intensity from the start:

  1. One touch imposed from the beginning: no progression from two touches, directly into one-touch to force systematic scanning before every reception
  2. Immediate counter-pressing on a turnover: the team that loses the ball has two seconds to recover it, otherwise they go in to defend
  3. Progressive space reduction: start on an 8x8 meter square and reduce it every two minutes down to 5x5 meters
  4. Quick defender rotation: change the defender on every turnover to maintain pressing intensity throughout

The U17 gegenpressing drills develop precisely this reaction to a turnover in chained successive rondos, ideal at the start of a session focused on the defensive phase.

Rondos and Gegenpressing in U17

In U17, the rondo is the most effective tool for developing gegenpressing. The chain of successive rondos, losing the ball, immediately counter-pressing, recovering, retaining again, exactly replicates the logic of gegenpressing in a match. This format, widely used by top professional teams as a reference training drill, is perfectly accessible in U17 as long as maximal intensity is maintained on every repetition.

What the gegenpressing rondo concretely installs in U17 players:

  1. Anticipatory reading of the loss: before the ball is even lost, the player identifies the closest opponents and anticipates their pressing run
  2. Collective coordination without a signal: the two or three best-positioned players trigger simultaneously, without waiting for the coach's instruction
  3. Channeling the opposing ball-carrier: the first pressing player orients the opponent toward the zone where teammates are waiting to intercept

The U17 technique drills offer rondo circuits combined with technical sequences that sustain high demands across the full game spectrum. The article what is tactical periodization and how to implement it? illustrates very concretely how elite coaches use the rondo as a central tool for gegenpressing development, directly applicable for enriching your U17 approach.
