U17 Build-Out Play: From Intention to Mastery
At the U17 level, the game shifts to another dimension. Players are no longer just discovering principles—they are expected to apply them consistently and effectively in matches. Build-out play becomes a true tactical tool to control the game, draw in the opponent, and create advantages. At this age, the objective is clear: reduce avoidable turnovers while maintaining ambition in possession (the dream for all of us, right?).
How to Structure Build-Out Play for U17
Unlike younger age groups, U17 players can handle a more structured organization. It’s relevant to define a clear team shape as soon as possession is regained:
- Center backs spread out to open passing angles
- Fullbacks positioned high or in intermediate zones depending on the game model
- Defensive midfielder able to drop between or in front of the back line
- Attacking players who pin and stretch the opposition
The goal is to create clear and coherent passing lanes within the first few seconds.
Game Awareness: Building Out Against High Press
This is a key skill at U17. Players must quickly read the situation:
- High press → quick play, limited touches, possible direct play
- Mid block → patient progression with controlled possession
- Low block → maintain possession and create imbalances over time
This ability to adapt often makes the difference between a forced build-out and a controlled one.
Scanning in Build-Out Play: A Decisive Factor for U17
At this level, technical ability alone is not enough. Build-out play relies heavily on a player’s ability to read the game before receiving the ball.
It is essential to prioritize:
- Body orientation before receiving
- Constant scanning (checking surroundings before receiving)
- Quick decision-making, ideally in one or two touches in deeper areas
A player who anticipates gains valuable time—and at this age, time becomes a decisive advantage to progress effectively.
U17 Build-Out Drills: How to Structure Your Sessions
To match game demands, prioritize formats that closely replicate real match situations. Here are some examples of exercise types to use (in addition to the hundreds of U17 build-out drills available on this page!):
Game-like situations with real pressure
- 6v4, 7v5 with the objective of breaking a line
- Build-out from the goalkeeper against organized pressing
Positional games
- Possession with defined zones
- Overload / underload situations to simulate match conditions
Conditioned games
- Mandatory short build-out
- Long play only allowed with a specific trigger
U17 Build-Out: The Mental Dimension
Build-out play at U17 is also a mental challenge. Three key elements must be considered:
- Accept playing under pressure
- Stay composed after a mistake
- Take responsibility in possession
Your role as a coach is to create a demanding yet supportive environment. A player who is afraid to lose the ball will not improve—we’ve seen it too many times.
A strong U17 team in build-out play is not one that never loses the ball, but one that understands why it plays, how it plays, and fully commits to its game model.
