Possession play and switching against a low block

Used by Jurgen Klopp during a training session at Liverpool, this exercise is ideal for working on attacking combinations against a low block to effectively exploit off-the-ball runs behind the defense.

Animation: Possession play and switching against a low block
On a half-field, create a space of about 20x30m on the left side, as well as an adjacent 5x30m area, as indicated in the diagram. Then place 2 mini-goals and 4 mannequins (or constri-foot) with a cone about 35m from the goal on the right side. Then set up a 5vs4 in the large area, place 1 player in the small area, and then a final player on the opposite side at the cone level.

The exercise will proceed as follows:
  1. The offensive players (here in blue) start with a possession game against the 4 defenders in the large area.
  2. After making at least 3 passes, they play to their teammate in the small area. No defender can press this player.
  3. The player will then make a through ball behind the defense to their teammate on the opposite side.
  4. This player finishes their action on the large goal.
  5. If the defenders regain possession, they must score as quickly as possible on one of the 2 mini-goals.
  6. Change the 2 offensive players every 3 minutes or so.

Progression

After a few rounds, you can propose these different progressions:
  • A defender can press the player in the small area (only one).
  • Players are limited to 2 touches of the ball.
  • The player in the small area can participate in the possession game (which then creates a 6vs4).
  • Players must make at least 5 passes before playing to the player in the small area.
  • The game is played in the same way, but on the opposite side (remember to set up the cones before the start of the exercise).

Working Too Much on Scanning in Senior Soccer: Good or Bad Idea?

The question is legitimate. In amateur senior soccer, some coaches consider scanning an innate individual quality that no longer really needs to be trained at this level. This is a view we challenge. Scanning remains improvable in senior soccer, but the work must be integrated into familiar drills rather than treated as a separate block.

In amateur senior soccer, the most common scanning gaps we observe are not the same as in U13. These are not players who do not know how to look up. They are players who stop scanning when physical pressure rises, late in the game, under intense opposing pressure. Training scanning under fatigue and high-pressure conditions is precisely what drives progress on this theme for senior players. The senior cognitive drills offer formats that develop this quality under near-match conditions, suited to the physical and tactical profiles of adult players.

How to Include Scanning in Senior Sessions

In senior soccer, scanning should not constitute a dedicated session block. It integrates as constraints within familiar drills:

  1. In the warm-up: passing circuits with a mandatory announcement before each pass activate the scanning routine
  2. In technical drills: a color to identify, a partner to name, a zone to find before touching the ball
  3. In small-sided games: reward actions that prove anticipatory reading (one-touch passes, directional first touches)
  4. In the full game: observe whether scanning habits express themselves naturally under game pressure

The senior warm-up drills offer several formats that integrate these cognitive constraints from the start of the session, in progressive and engaging situations.

Scanning and Physical Preparation in Senior Soccer

In senior soccer, there is a direct link between players' endurance level and their scanning quality late in a match. A fatigued player scans less, decides less well, and loses more balls in the last twenty minutes. This link between endurance and game reading must be worked on explicitly: offering scanning drills late in the session, when players are already tired, builds a resistance to decisional fatigue that transfers directly into matches. The article soccer conditioning: complete program and guide offers very concrete guidance on managing physical load in senior soccer, directly applicable for calibrating scanning work intensity across the season.
