Speed work, one-two pass, dribble, and shooting

Another exercise used by Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich during a public training session, this circuit is ideal for working on agility: reaction time, concentration, and footwork. Your players will not be disappointed!

Animation: Speed work, one-two pass, dribble, and shooting
On a half-field, set up a small speed-agility circuit composed of 4 cones of different colors, 2 hurdles, and finally 4 ground bars. Then place a ball source, and 4 cones at the edge of the penalty area, parallel to the goal line.

Form 2 groups of 4 players. The first group positions at the entrance of the speed-agility circuit, and the second positions at the ball source.

The 1st player starts and must touch the colored cones according to your instructions (e.g., “blue, yellow, red!”). He then jumps over the hurdles before weaving through the ground bars with side steps. He finishes with a sprint to the marker, before turning around and performing a one-two pass with one of the players at the ball source. He retrieves the ball, dribbles, and finishes with a shot.

You can also set up the same circuit on the other side of the field to alternate shots with the right foot and left foot.

The role of agility in a U16 game model

In U16, agility is no longer just an individual physical quality. It is a collective tactical asset that directly shapes how a team plays. A team whose players all start fast at the right moment can press high, counter-attack quickly, and defend by moving forward toward the opponent rather than backing off. A team whose players lack agility will be pushed toward more defensive tactical choices and less challenging ones for opponents.

This link between individual agility and collective playing style is what makes this theme particularly important in U16. A coach who works on their players' agility is in reality working on the quality of their team's play across the entire field. The U16 explosive strength drills offer formats that integrate precisely this collective dimension, with situations where individual explosive effort creates immediate tactical advantages for the team.

Combining agility and counter-pressing in U16

This is one of the most powerful combinations to develop in U16. A team that counter-presses well is a team whose players trigger maximal agility efforts at the moment of possession loss, in precise directions, with a clear collective intention. This quality does not improvise itself: it is built in training, in situations that replicate the exact conditions of a match.

What we often observe among U16 teams that counter-press best is that their players do not necessarily have more raw agility than others. They have a better reading of the moment of loss and a faster reaction to this unconventional trigger signal. It is this cognitive and reactive agility that makes the difference. The U16 counter-pressing drills offer formats that develop precisely this quality, in situations close to real match conditions.

How to improve your U16 players' agility

In U16, improving a group's agility starts with building a culture of maximal intensity on all short efforts throughout the session. A player who never gives one hundred percent on their first strides in training will not do so in a match. Building this culture requires consistency and high standards from the coach, not just specific drills.

Concrete principles to apply in U16: variable signals at each repetition to develop general reactivity, full recovery between efforts to guarantee start quality, and a technical finishing action at the end of every explosive sequence so that physical gains transfer to match play. The winter break and pre-season preparation are privileged moments for reinforcing this work more intensively. The article soccer conditioning: complete program and guide offers a very concrete framework for planning these intensive work periods, directly applicable for structuring your U16 players' agility development across the season.
